American McCabe Sprints to Biggest Career Win at

Stage 4 of 2016 Tour of Utah

Morton Retains Yellow Jersey for Overall Race Lead

With Three Stages Remaining

Editor’s Note: Complete stage results and overall race standings are available at TourofUtah.com

KEARNS, Utah (Aug. 4, 2016)–  American Travis McCabe of the Holowesko | Citadel Racing Team presented by Hincapie Sportswear edged out his competitors in the chaotic bunch sprint to win Stage 4 presented by UnitedHealthcare at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. McCabe scored one of the biggest wins of his career in a time of three hours and 23 minutes in the township of Kearns, known for fast finishes in speed skating at the Utah Olympic Oval. A bike length separated McCabe from runner-up Kiel Reijnen (USA) of Trek-Segafredo and third-place finisher Sebastian Lucas Haedo (Argentina) of Team Jamis.

“We just waited patiently. It was a pretty hectic finish coming into the final at 70-kilometers an hour, and it was a pretty choppy wind. It was pretty much a patience game. I stayed in good position, but not too (far) forward,” said McCabe, who finished third on Stage 2 presented by America First Credit Union on Tuesday.

It is the second stage win for the Holowesko l Citadel team, as teammate Robin Carpenter (USA) won Stage 2 in Torrey. “This past week has been great for us. The Stage 2 third place was a validation that I had the legs. I was pretty confident coming into the last 500 meters.”

Australian Lachlan Morton of Jelly Belly presented by MAXXIS Cycling Team finished safely in the bunch and retained the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies Overall Leader jersey. With little change in the overall standings, Morton continues to hold a seven-second lead over Adrien Costa (USA) of Axeon Hagens Berman and a nine-second margin on Andrew Talansky (USA) of Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling. The time bonus for second place moved Reijnen into the top 10 in the general classification.

“It’s always good to be on the podium, but when the guys work hard for you, you want to win. We’ve got another shot tomorrow,” commented Reijnen, who won Stage 1 at the 2015 Tour of Utah. “I did not get the stage win, lost the points jersey and the fan favorite all to one guy. What are you gonna do?”

Stage winner McCabe takes over the Utah Sports Commission Sprint jersey and was voted the America First Credit Union Fan Favorite as Best Sprinter. Costa retained the Utah Office of Tourism King of the Mountain jersey and the Subaru Best Young Rider jersey.

The start of Stage 4 presented by UnitedHealthcare began on the corporate campus of IM Flash in Lehi. The 95.7-mile (154 km) route featured two Utah Sports Commission Sprint lines along the 28-mile stretch of the Mountain View Corridor (MVC) in the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains. Four riders were left off the front by the last of the two and a half laps of the MVC freeway, but their four-minute lead eventually went down to 20 seconds with 12 miles to go.

Fans were treated to an action-packed finish along a four-mile circuit that finished adjacent to the Utah Olympic Oval, site of the long track speed skating events for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The last survivor of the break, American Matthew Busche of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, put in a final solo attack, but it was fruitless. Busche was awarded the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Most Aggressive Rider jersey for his efforts.

Friday, Aug. 5, features Stage 5 presented by Zions Bank, with 115.6 miles (186 km) from Antelope Island State Park to Bountiful. It is a repeat road race from 2015, with short, but very steep climbs and four Utah Office of Tourism King of the Mountain climbs — North Ogden Divide, Trappers Loop and the two ascents of the Bountiful Bench. The start at Antelope Island State Park, which sits on the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, will begin with two three-mile circuits on the island before crossing the seven-mile causeway to the mainland. Sprint lines will be staged at Hooper, Eden and Bountiful. The two nine-mile circuits in Bountiful return this year, which include a difficult climb on 400 North along the Bountiful Bench. Festivities in downtown Bountiful will be on Main Street at Center Street for the finish, with the peloton rolling in a northbound direction.

Principal's Message

The start of the 2016-17 school year has been fantastic!  Students and teachers alike have been enthusiastic and energetic about the new school year and things have gone almost perfectly.

There have been a couple of very significant changes this year.  We have started a new class period, called FLEX Period, for all students.  This new class is meant to be somewhat flexible (hence the name) and multi-purposed in use.  Some students will use it for a study hall period, some for an additional class, some for remediation and others to make up lost credit.  Our FLEX period will meet every day of the school week except for Mondays.  During this class period we will also hold most of our assemblies, our announcements and other school business/activities.   This helps to preserve class time for teaching and learning during the rest of the day.  Students may also leave their FLEX class to go to another teacher’s class to make up a test or other missing work during the FLEX period (this must be done with prior arrangements and signatures from teachers).  We will also have a new schedule this year.  We will no longer have late starts on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Instead, we will have a late start each Monday – school will begin at 8:20 AM for students – and an early out each Monday – classes will end at 1:50 PM.  During the mornings, teachers will be involved with meetings and trainings and will not be available to students. However, all teachers will be available for extra help, make-up/retesting, and other needs to students each and every Monday afternoon during the early release time from 1:50-2:40 PM.  This is the perfect time to retest, to get additional help or to talk to your teacher about the 3 days you will be gone this week.

We are very excited about the changes this year and things have gone very smoothly so far.  Students seem to like the study hall time each day or the chance to take that extra class here at Weber High during FLEX instead of online.  We are confident it will be a very positive and productive change to our schedule.

One last note – our Student Body Officers have selected, “One Team, One Goal, No Limits” as the theme for this school year.  We are off to a great start and there truly is no limit to what we can accomplish this year.  It is great to be a WARRIOR!!

Principal's Message

Welcome back students!

We are excited to have our teachers and students back as we start off our new school year. This first week of school we have early outs and school is dismissed at 12:15 PM each day. We appreciate your help in getting students to school on time and picking them up after if they do not ride a bus or walk.

If anyone is interested in serving on our Community Council, please contact the main office. It would be nice to have up to 4 more members and if more are interested, we will have voting elections on September 28th during Parent/Teacher Conferences.

As we get into the swing of things, please make sure you are checking the portal to stay up on your student's grades and attendance. If you have questions or concerns, please email the teacher(s), myself, or Mrs. Haws. If you do not have an account, please go to the district website, wsd.net, click on the Parents & Student tab, then click on Create a Parent Account. If you have problems, contact our main office and we can help.

I am excited for our year and look forward to the events we have planned. Thank you for your support and please contact me with any questions or concerns that you have.

Ms. Earnest

Principal Newsletter

I am amazed each time I walk out the back doors of the school and see the vision of the wonderful landscape as it has changed through the seasons of this school year.  We are now approaching a new season of welcome change within our school.  Saunders Construction workers have become the newest Knights, as they prepare the foundations to add to our school’s castle, with the new gym addition and remodel project.

We are planning to have a formal groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate this event on March 29, at 3:30 P.M.  It will take place in the south parking lot.  You are welcome to attend and celebrate this day with us.

The baseball and track teams are in full operation with practices after school. Our Theater Arts students have been working on the musical production “#Ourshow”.   We have upcoming musical concerts and other events to enjoy.  Please check the calendar for the many opportunities to watch our students share their talents with us.

We appreciate your patience with the parking situation. We remind ourselves this is temporary, and we will have a great upcoming situation.

Harrisville:

Future improvements projects for the widening of Larsen Lane are involved on the east end by 11 feet to add dual left hand lanes.  Bids were received June 2016, with construction set for August 2016-October 2016.  This project is being funded by three agencies.  Road widening is being covered by Weber County Local Transportation Funds, Traffic signals are being covered by UDOT and Bona Vista is installing an improved culinary water line at the same time.  The Right-of-Way has already been acquired from Common Sense for the overall project.

The widening of the road is necessary to improve the level of service.  Additionally, the improvements will increase safety. The completion of the intersection project will be in 2016 with the widening project scheduled for 2019.  The two-way left hand turn lane eliminates stopping/stacking of through traffic for left turns.  Improved safety for the road will be provided by opposite lane separation, protection for left-turn vehicles and sidewalks for safe pedestrian routes. The current average daily driving on Larsen Lane is 14,000 which is projected to increase to 21,000 by 2030.

Check out www.cityofharrisville.com for further information regarding the Larsen Lane project
