Harrisville City Report October

Dawn Scothern / newletters

A reminder that Fall Clean-up is Oct. 31- Nov. 4. Harrisville City will be offering the opportunity to clean-up yards and neighborhoods throughout the city. Two waste containers will be located at the main park; one for garbage and one for green waste. No hazardous waste or construction debris accepted. Please plan ahead to utilize this opportunity.

As school has started we would like to reach out to parents and neighbors to be aware of the children going to and from school. There have been a few things identified as serious safety concerns and would like to make everyone aware, and seek assistance in making our schools safer. If your children walk to school, please ensure they are encouraged to remain on the sidewalks and only cross in designated cross walks or at intersections. For children waiting at Bus Stops please encourage them to stay out of the streets until the Bus arrives and obey the drivers.

Majestic Elementary: Please do not park on the north side of 2550 North to load or unload your children. 2550 N is a 40 mile per hour road, it is posted to 20 MPH when children are present however, motorists still have a hard time seeing the small children darting out from between vehicles to cross the road. Also, please do not park in the bus loading areas or Double Park on the south side of 2550 North as that also creates serious safety concerns for children. A safe alternative is to drive to the south side of the school on 2425 North and wait along the curb to load or unload. The red curb designates no parking but stopping and waiting to load or unload is legal.

Orion Jr. High: One of the more serious safety concerns is vehicles entering or leaving the parking lot to pick up or drop off children. Drivers need to stop completely at the stop signs and look for children walking on the sidewalks and the north/south cross walk on 2000 North. There were several close calls last year with students in the cross walks and people not paying attention when re-entering 2000 north.

Green Wood Charter School:  Parents please DO NOT park, stop or wait on Hwy 89 in the area of the school to pick up or drop off your students. UDOT has designated the area a no parking, loading or unloading zone on both the east and west side of the highway and is demanding the city actively enforce all traffic laws in the area. There is heavy traffic in the area and the safety of children is a major concern. The speed limit is 45 MPH and many southbound vehicles are still slowing from the 55 MPH speed limit prior to that area. Pick up and drop off children in the areas designated on school property. Harrisville Police Department will be doing patrols in the area around all of the schools and any violators will be cited. If you observe a safety issue please report it immediately to the Harrisville Police by calling Weber Public Safety Dispatch at 801-629-8221. In emergency’s, do not hesitate, call 911 immediately. Thank you for all your help keeping the children safe at our schools.

Tami L. Johnson

Don’t miss the premiere annual holiday kick-off event in Ogden—the Weber School Foundation Christmas Tree Jubilee!  The Weber Foundation seeks to help the more than 30,000 children that are enrolled in the Weber School District.

The Jubilee is set for November 21-25, 2016 at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center,

2415 Washington Blvd. Ogden, Utah.

Since 1980, the Christmas Tree Jubilee has raised millions of dollars to support children in Weber County, particularly those with special needs.  In 2014, my daughter, Karina and I, along with our good friends: Teresa Meyers, Emi Schofield and Melissa Richey, all collaborated to decorate a tree on behalf of Pioneer Elementary School.  This tree had a theme: “A Homespun Christmas.”  It was adorned with homemade crocheted ornaments including little stockings, gingerbread men, snowflakes and snowmen. Everyone shared their talents with the creation of the Christmas tree.  It was a wonderful experience for all!

Winter Parking

Please remember the winter parking ordinance begins November 1st and remains in effect until April 1st.  This means no parking on City streets between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Adhering to the parking ordinance helps our Public Works Department keep our streets clear and safe during winter months. Remember, vehicles parked on the road during or after a snow storm impede snow plowing and may be towed at the owner’s expense. Home owners are responsible to remove snow from sidewalks in front of their home and private driveways. Although it can be inconvenient to remove snow pushed in front of driveways by the snow plows, our drivers cannot prevent this. Please avoid pushing/ shoveling snow back into the roadway after it has been plowed. Everyone will enjoy the winter season more by working together and lending a hand to those who need help removing the snow.

Orion Junior High Teacher Wins Educational Grant

Tuesday, December 6, 2016 - 10:15am
Tami L. Johnson

Some exciting news recently happened at Orion Junior High School in Harrisville.  Sandi Tomlinson, a 9th grade Language Arts teacher, was awarded an educational grant of $2,500. This was done through Farmer`s Insurance’s “Thank Americas Teachers” program

Mrs. Tomlinson found out about this grant through her insurance agent at Farmers Insurance, who then nominated her.   Farmers Insurance provides over a million dollars every year to deserving teachers.  Receiving this initial grant will now allow Tomlinson to be eligible for a larger grant of $100,000 within about 6 months.

Tomlinson jumped on the idea of applying for the grant because she knew her students could use Chromebooks and she figured this could be the solution! Even though she entered the contest a week late, Tomlinson moved up the ladder quickly amongst the other deserving teachers to eventually land in the top spot.  So many helping hands went into the voting process to help.

Tomlinson says, “Every day our student body, teachers, and faculty cast a vote for me and my proposal.  We sent letters to parents and asked them to vote, too. They responded in great numbers!”

Messages were also sent out on Facebook, where Tomlinson asked her friends to vote for her. She tells us, “I have never seen such an outpouring of support for this great cause.”

At the end of October Tomlinson was awarded the $2500 grant. “I wanted to use the money for a couple of Chromebooks to be used in my classroom for kids who don’t have access to the internet at home,” Tomlinson says, “However, if I win the bigger grant in the next 6 months, I will be able to afford a classroom set, not to mention some excess to be kept for the future.”

Therefore, Tomlinson has chosen to give the money to Orion’s yearbook advisor, Mrs. Reed.  “She needs a few new cameras desperately, and she was very instrumental in helping me win the first grant. I think she can get several snazzy cameras with all the bells and whistles, and it will benefit all the kids at Orion!”

Having started her teaching career later in life, Tomlinson chose to raise her family first and then went back to school.  She taught for 5 years in Ogden School District at Mount Ogden Middle School; and then 4 more years at home with her teenage daughter who was struggling in school and then came to Orion Junior High School in 2008.  This will mark her 9th year teaching 9th grade students in Language Arts.

Mrs. Tomlinson has no doubt in her mind when she says, “I just love kids! No, that’s not quite true; I just love these kids! I have people tell me all the time, ‘I could never be in a room with 36 fourteen-year-olds.’ To which I say, “I would rather be in a room with them than with high-schoolers or elementary kids!”  According to Tomlinson, “9th graders are still impressionable; they still need a mentor and at times a grandma.”

For Tomlinson, the real motivator behind teaching is the fact that she truly loves her students.  The kids know she loves them.  She tells them so all the time and says, “At first they don’t believe me, but by the time the year ends, they know for sure!”

Tomlinson would very much like to thank Farmers Insurance and “Thank Americas Teachers” for the opportunity to win this grant.  “They have been so generous.  I also want to thank Chris Earnest, our principal, for the support she gave me.”

Also, her sincere thanks goes out to Amy Hall who allowed use of Orion’s library to vote, Trudy Slater who put up a table so the kids could vote between classes, Missy Reed and Jennifer Lee who made sure the kids voted before beginning their classwork.

In addition, the entire English department sent letters to parents. Jason Paige made sure there was a link on the school website. And finally, Tomlinson wants to thank Clayton Gladwell and his wife, Kate, whom she said, “Nominated me and encouraged me to go after the prize.”

Over the Christmas break Tomlinson plans to write a new proposal to be entered to win the $100,000 grant opportunity.  Then the voting will begin again after the new year in 2017!

Warm socks, hats and gloves will be handed out to anyone in need. Due to the ongoing renovation of the Main Library, this annual event will be hosted at Ogden’s First Presbyterian Church.  This community celebration is free and open to the public.  Call 801-337-2690 for more information.  The Church will be open on Saturday, December 24th from 12:30-4:00 p.m. for the celebration.  The location of The First Presbyterian Church is 880 St. Ogden, Utah 84403.

Winter Parking in Harrisville

Winter is here! Please remember the winter parking ordinance began November 1st and remains in effect until April 1st with no parking on City streets between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.  Adhering to the parking ordinances helps our Public Works Department keep our streets clear and safe during the winter months.  Vehicles parked on the road during or after a snow storm impede snow plowing and may be towed at the owner’s expense.  Home owners are responsible to remove snow from sidewalks in front of their home and private driveways.  Although it can be inconvenient to remove snow pushed in front of driveways by the snow plow, our drivers cannot prevent this.  Please avoid pushing/shoveling snow back into the roadway after it has been plowed.  Everyone will enjoy the winter season more by working together and lending a hand to those who need help removing the snow.

Don’t be a Crime Victim In Harrisville

When the weather gets colder many members of the homeless community begin to look for a warm place to stay out of the elements.  They will take advantage of any place they can find including unlocked sheds, garages, cars and homes.  As many of them look through neighborhoods for that shelter, they find property belonging to you; and, when they discover you have left it unsecured, they feel it is a gift to them.  Please remember to lock your doors and vehicles and secure valuables such as mowers, snow blowers and bikes behind a locked gate or door and out of view from the street.

Also, please remember to not keep your car running while you let it “warm up” as you run into the house.  Thieves are out looking for vehicles running in driveways in the mornings.  Even a locked door will only slow them down by 10 seconds and the next thing you know you’ll find broken glass in its place.  If you observe a suspicious vehicle or person in your neighborhood, you are asked to call police immediately.  Don’t wait even 5 minutes.  If you don’t want to call 911 you can reach Harrisville Police 24 hours a day through the Weber Public Safety Dispatch Center non-emergency number at 801-629-8221.

Lieutenant Keith Wheelwright, Deputy Chief of Police in the Harrisville City Department, tells us, “Harrisville Police Department has officers on duty 24 hours a day.  We are not inconvenienced by your calls.  We take pride in preventing crime before it happens and have a strong desire to maintain a safe community.  Yet, we still need your help as we cannot be in every neighborhood all the time.”

Keep your eyes out

In this busy time of year when we are anticipating Christmas time and exchanging gifts also comes the convenience to order online.  However, we are learning more and more thieves are targeting neighborhoods within Harrisville, North Ogden and Pleasant View. They are watching for those packages to arrive on doorsteps.  Fed Ex and UPS are especially busy during this holiday season.  If you’re not going to be home and you expect a package to arrive please notify your neighbors so they can be on the lookout for you.  Again, please call the non-emergency number (above) if you see anyone suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

Principal Newsletter

Great improvements at North Ogden Junior High have steadily been taking place. New carpet in the lobby and breezeway, updated paint in hallway, and cafeteria.   The old gym will soon be available for our volleyball team, and PE classes. The transition for the theater locker room and stage are soon approaching the final stages of completion.

The new gym is continually progressing, with the hard work of construction and details being met. I am very impressed with the quality of the workmanship that is taking place every day, to give our students the best.

Our teachers and staff have commented on the wonderful students in our building. I appreciate the efforts on all parts to show the kindness and respect to each other here in our building.  I enjoy greeting students as they walk into school, and throughout the day on their way to class.

Principal's Message

As many of you might have seen in recent news reports, there is a significant increase in the number of students at Fremont High.  The prediction is that this increase will continue for several years.  As a result, our District is looking at adjusting boundaries to shift more students to Weber High and Roy High to help alleviate the crowding at Fremont.  As part of this process, Weber High will conduct a boundary study and make recommendations to the District Office.  We need approximately 10 parents to be involved with the Weber High boundary study.  This will require attendance and 3 meetings – one in December, one in January and one in February, as well as the ability and willingness to seek out input from community members while studying the possible boundary adjustments and the outcomes of each.  It is anticipated that the boundary adjustments for Weber High School will mainly affect those in the Harrisville area.  Those living in or near this area would be especially welcomed to be involved.

For those interested in being a part of the Weber High Boundary Study committee, please contact me either by phone or email.  I can be reached at (801)476-3701 at the school or my email is:  vwardle@wsd.net

Thank you in advance for helping and being a part of such a major transition within the District.  Adjusting boundaries for schools is never easy but we certainly want to do what is best for our students and community.

Mr. Wardle
