Long Time Employee Retires After Nearly 55 Years in Harrisville City

Tuesday, January 24, 2017 - 11:15am
Tami L. Johnson

Working over a half a century is a long time!  And working for one particular city all those years is exactly what Shanna Edwards, of Harrisville City, did.  Throughout her career, she demonstrated several roles and abilities beginning in 1962.  Now, she will channel her focus in a new direction: retirement.  But first, we’d like to share some interesting and fun background information on this very talented and hard-working lady!

Shanna Edwards and her husband, Lynn, will soon celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Congratulations!  They have raised 5 children: Lee, Rona, Erin, Kaelyn and Evan.  In her early years working for the City, Shanna would go to meetings in the evenings but did most of the work from home to be there for her children.

Harrisville has always been home to Shanna with the exception of only a couple of years in her marriage.  In fact, her ancestors, Pleasant Green and Sarah Jane Marler Lake Taylor  were early founders.  And her Great, Great-Grandfather, David Crowther, was also an early settler.  Thereafter, her grandparents and parents decided to continue to reside in Harrisville, as well.

Shanna received her start as an employee with Harrisville City back in 1962 when Harrisville citizens came together and petitioned for incorporation.  Her father, Lorin Crowther, was on the first planning commission at the time.  They needed a secretary and he asked Shanna to volunteer. This began a life-long journey of dedicated service to Harrisville City.  Along with this position of secretary, Shanna served as Adjustment Board Secretary.  According to Shanna, “In the beginning most volunteered their time, services, and even equipment. Until 1965, meetings were held on a rotating basis in the homes of commissioners. Dessert was served afterwards.”

After a few years, Shanna began to receive a monthly salary of $10 which eventually grew to $15. In the 1980’s Shanna began working a few more hours, part time, at the City offices.  As time went by, she continued to serve in various ways within the City including: Court Clerk in the Municipal Court and Land Use and Development Coordinator (which entailed many different jobs).

Shanna has also volunteered many years as the City Historian.  In 2004, Harrisville Horizons, a history of Harrisville, was published by Shanna, Joyce Larsson and Joanne Christensen.  Later, these ladies also produced a pamphlet, free to the public, which included an historical walking tour of the City.

Shanna commented that the main highlights over the years involve the people with whom she has worked. “Challenges for me have been going from the era of typewriter and carbon copies to computers with continual updating of computer programs.  However, I have loved that challenge because it has been a great continual learning process.”

When asked, what makes Harrisville a great city to live in, Shanna says, “Definitely the people.  Also, the City has tried to maintain areas that are somewhat rural and it has a great atmosphere.  Harrisville is a wonderful place to raise families.”

After retirement, Shanna has in mind what she would like to do. “I began my career volunteering for the City and will continue volunteering as City Historian. However, I hope to spend more time at our Bear Lake house with my family and I look forward to new adventures.”

Shanna would like to express sincere THANKS to her family and co-workers. She said, “Love them!”

An Open House will be held in Shanna Edwards’s honor on Monday, January 30, 2017, from 2-4 p.m. at the Harrisville City Cabin  located at 725 W. Harrisville Rd.

You may also wish her well at sedwards@cityofharrisville.com

Principal Newsletter

Great improvements at North Ogden Junior High have steadily been taking place. New carpet in the lobby and breezeway, updated paint in hallway, and cafeteria.   The old gym will soon be available for our volleyball team, and PE classes. The transition for the theater locker room and stage are soon approaching the final stages of completion.

The new gym is continually progressing, with the hard work of construction and details being met. I am very impressed with the quality of the workmanship that is taking place every day, to give our students the best.

Our teachers and staff have commented on the wonderful students in our building. I appreciate the efforts on all parts to show the kindness and respect to each other here in our building.  I enjoy greeting students as they walk into school, and throughout the day on their way to class.

North Ogden Skate Park to be Relocated

A great deal of thought and research has gone into the discussion and relocation of the new North Ogden Skate Park. Several council meetings, as well, have been the focus.

Mayor Taylor, of North Ogden, conducted a poll on Facebook, in which he asked the community where their choice of a new skate park should be. The poll was not a vote to decide the location, but rather, five City Council members were chosen as representatives of the people and they took the final vote. The two choices narrowed down to Wadman Park or the North Ogden Park.

In the end, the result is that the North Ogden Skate Park will be built on the existing volleyball court at the North Ogden Park.  The volleyball courts will then be relocated up near the museum.

Because of the topography, the skate park, itself, would be about 10,000 square feet. This is smaller than the current skate park which is 13,000 square feet.  However, the new skate park would have an area for expansion.  The $214,000 Weber County is paying to relocate the Skate Park would cover the entire cost for this park and relocating the volleyball courts (no out of pocket money needed from the City taxes).

However, the City Council is considering building a “skate path” around the track which would increase the cost of this option by about $30,000.  The track, is, however, optional, and the $214,000 could be used just to build the park and move the volleyball courts.

The Wadman Park appeared to be out of the mix for the new Skate Park in North Ogden because it is not centrally located.

A contractor is planning on being selected by early February and starting construction as soon as possible—based on weather.  Currently, there is a Request for Qualifications publicly seeking companies to bid on the Skate Park project.  After proposals are received there will be a decision made.

The Weber County Library, North Branch, needs the Skate Park property to be turned over by March 1st. The property will be used for additional parking for the library and also partially for the amphitheater area.  The library also expects construction to begin in early March. Their plans have been approved by North Ogden Planning Commission and they are approved to begin renovations.

According to Mayor Taylor, “I think the skate park is important to preserve.  In the negotiations with Weber County, I wanted to make sure that the County would pay the cost to relocate the skate park, so it would not be lost. I was able to gain this agreement, and Weber County is paying the entire cost of relocating the skate park.”

Mayor Taylor also feels the park is important to him because, “There are so many young people, in our City, who use this park.  It is one of our most popular parks and provides a fun place for young people to use their talents and skills on bicycles, skate boards, roller blades and scooters. It is a great park for our young people and I’m glad to see it relocated!”

Harrisville City is asking for residents not to put snow back out in the street. Parked cars and other obstacles out in the road is impeding snow removal. Pile the snow so it will not encroach on the City streets. Contact the Harrisville City 8 ext. 1001 for further information. The City is asking for people to clear a 3-foot radius around the fire hydrants so the fire department can quickly take care of any fire needs.

There is a need to beware of snow on the rooftops so that it not to get too deep and heavy for the structure. Also, clear the vents to your home. With more snow in the forecast, we need to be careful of the piling of snow and cleaning the sidewalks so that you can see backing out of driveways.
