Donors urgently needed to increase Red Cross blood supply

(Feb. 2, 2017) – The American Red Cross urgently needs blood donors to make an appointment to give this winter so that patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments.

Michael Harper knows how critical it is to have a readily available blood supply. “I used over 300 units of blood when I was younger after an auto accident. Blood donations helped save my life,” he said. “Now, I would like to donate as much or more than I have received.”

Blood donations are urgently needed now and throughout the winter to maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients in need. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate from Jan. 30 to Feb. 26, 2017, are eligible to receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email for making blood and platelet donation a priority this winter.

Volunteers needed

Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit www.redcross.org/volunteer.

How to help

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Weber School District May Adjust Boundaries to Relieve Crowding

Tami L. Johnson

Certain schools in the Weber County area are experiencing massive growth, particularly in the western area.  Weber School District stakeholders are looking at several options for an ongoing boundary study.  Many of our schools are reaching maximum capacity and some even exceeding it.

Fremont High School, for example, was built in 1994 with a permanent capacity of 1750 students.  Enrollment currently, is at 2061 students this school year (2016-2017) with projections adding another 90 students this year. With the addition of 15 portable classrooms, the current capacity has increased to 2054 for Fremont. Obviously, this puts a lot of strain on areas such as the lunch room, auditorium, restrooms and hallways.

The expected enrollment for Fremont for the 2017-2018 school year will surpass 2250 students.  The Weber School District website states, “The school simply cannot accommodate these numbers.”

At a committee meeting held on January 19th, school and district administrators presented plans developed by individual school committees consisting of parents, school officials and community members.

The group picked two possible options regarding the boundary changes between Fremont and Weber High Schools: The first would encompass all of Harrisville and send those students to Weber High.  The second plan includes Harrisville and Pleasant View on city boundary lines, sending those students to Weber High.

The goal of this Weber School District boundary is to relieve overcrowding at certain schools by realigning boundaries and moving students to surrounding schools that can accommodate more students.

At the end of February, an open house will be held to receive more input from the public. In March, the District Committee will then submit a final proposal to the Weber School District Board of Education for discussion and approval.

More information about the boundary study can be found on the Weber School District Facebook page.

The main idea of the CERT program is to educate individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area. CERT trains individuals in basic disaster response skills, such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster medical operations.  Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers assist others in the community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

Harrisville City is offering CERT classes running from March 2-April 12th, 2017.

Every month we have a continuing education class to give refresher training.  The location and topics are posted on the City website.  We are in the process of updating our CERT list.  If you have email and would like to be notified of upcoming events and C.E.R.T. please send your email to harrisvillecert@gmail.com.

If you do not have an email but would still like to be contacted, please call the City Offices at 801-782-4100 ext. 1000. Harrisville City will reimburse residents for the $30 registration fee for new CERT members who reside in Harrisville with valid receipt.

CERT Safety Tip: Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

During a power outage, never use generators, grills, or other gasoline such as propane or charcoal-burning devices in your home. Also, don’t use inside garages, carports or near doors or windows or vents.  They produce carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas that kills more than 500 Americans each year.

The Little Mermaid at Weber High

Tami L. Johnson

Spring fever is on the rise, and so are the Spring plays at Weber High School. If you’re itching to get out and do something besides hunker down at home, you’re in luck!

Soon to debut is The Little Mermaid production, which will run from April 27th-May 6th.  A special character brunch, where you can eat and take pictures with all your favorite characters, will also be held.

If you’ve ever wondered how the Spring musicals differ from the Fall ones, Mark Daniels, the Production Director of Weber High School, tells us how: “The Fall musicals are open auditions, which means anyone in the school can audition for them, and the Spring musicals are presented by the Productions Company.”

The Productions Company is the premier musical theater class which can be taken in the school and is cast by auditions that are held in the Spring before the school year starts.

Daniels also tells us that, “The plays are decided by what would work best with the kids who will be performing in them the next year.  And on closing nights of the Fall and Spring musicals, we announce the shows to be performed the next year.”

Daniels says, “I’m excited to take the audience ‘under the sea’ and experience the journey that Ariel takes.  Every scene and song is so immersive into The Little Mermaid’s world and the songs are so lively and exciting.”

Ashley Anderson, an officer in the Productions Company, as well as a student at Weber High, is playing one of the lead roles as Ursula. She says, “I love acting because there is a joy I get from it that nothing else compares to.  I get to bring my community joy by putting on a show and entertaining them.”

Ashley tells us that her favorite part of being in a production is, “Seeing the little children’s faces light up when something magical happens.

Even as a busy high school student, Ashley says, “No matter what stresses I have in my life at the time, I can always turn to theater. During the time I am on stage, I forget about everything else. The only thing that matters is Ursula.”

When asked what she felt her director, Mark Daniels, adds to any production, her response was, “Perfection.  No matter what, he always insists that we give him everything we have.  He knows our potential and he pushes us to reach our full potential.”

Ashley’s favorite part of being in the cast of the Little Mermaid is playing the villain.  “It is something completely opposite of me.  Ursula is very slow and methodical and deliberate; While I am very fast paced, bouncing off the walls and talking a million miles a minute.”

As a student in the theater department, Ashley has learned responsibility, following up on commitments and being dependable.  She feels these are very valuable skills that may have taken longer to acquire later on.

As a lead role, Ashley also says this has taught her humility.  “I know many others would have loved the part that I received, but I was chosen, and that has shown me to be grateful for what I receive and to do the best I can.”

As a final note, Mark Daniels adds, “Presenting this show to the children will be fun.  Almost every little girl had dreams of being a mermaid.  The audience is really going to make this show exciting.”

So, come see what’s it’s all about April 27th-May 6th, 2017 at Weber High School.

NSU hosts PLTW Launch training

Curriculum designed to encourage interest in STEM

Leah Jackson

06/04/2014

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University hosted the first-ever training session for Project Lead the Way Launch, the elementary school level course for PLTW, a curriculum that introduces students to concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to youngsters. NSU is the Louisiana affiliate for Project Lead the Way, a program that integrates STEM projects to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering. The program already has established curriculum for high school and middle school students and is now reaching to younger learners with PLTW Launch.

A group of educators from throughout Louisiana and two from out of state participated in the intensive two and a half day training that will be incorporated into classrooms this fall for kindergarten through fifth grade students.

“This is the first training of this kind for PLTW Launch in the country. We are training these teachers to be lead teachers and they will go back and train teachers to be Launch teachers,” said Dr. Phil Brown, PLTW coordinator and assistant professor in NSU’s Department of Mathematics and Engineering Technology

“The kindergartners begin with a Jack and the Bean Stalk project,” said Stacy Reynolds, STEM coordinator at Jimmy Brown Elementary in Star City, Ark., who led the training with Corey Hansen, librarian at Valley View Elementary in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. “They study the structure and function of things and see who can build the tallest, highest bean stalk.”

Young students also study paintbrushes, examining the way they are made and their different functions, then make brushes that perform specific tasks. Older students learn programming to build robots and other complex machines that perform specific tasks.

For more information on Project Lead the Way, visit the organization’s website at pltw.org or contact Brown at (318) 357-5026 or e-mail brownp@nsul.edu. You can also visit Northwestern State’s PLTW page at pltw.org/northwestern-state-university-louisiana.

PETER / WENDY

by Jeremy Bloom

A lyrical, atmospheric interpretation of Peter Pan, Playwright Jeremy Bloom strips the familiar story down to its emotional essence. Peter lures Wendy away from her nursery to the magical world of Neverland, where she joins his adventures with Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily, and the menacing Captain Hook. A low-tech, inventive adaptation that pays homage to the darker themes of J. M. Barrie's original, Peter/Wendy will mesmerize audiences of all ages.
